Choosing a university from one QS row is like choosing a laptop from the colour of the box. Rankings show reputation and research strength, but not undergraduate teaching language, laboratory access, cost or scholarship probability.
They remain useful as a starting map when you check the edition and understand what the ranking measures.
What the QS subject ranking shows
As of 17 August 2026, the current QS subject edition is 2026, published on 25 March 2026. Search results may still lead to an editorial article containing a 2025 table, so check the year of the ranking itself.
The subject ranking helps compare research reputation, citations and international connections. Positions change and filters update, so use the live QS table rather than treating a copied top ten as permanent.
What about QS 2027 overall?
In QS World University Rankings 2027, the leading mainland Chinese positions include Peking University at 13, Tsinghua at 14, Fudan at 26, Shanghai Jiao Tong at 36 and Zhejiang at 47.
Overall and subject rankings answer different questions. The department matters more for Computer Science, while the overall ranking indicates the scale and international visibility of the institution.
Universities to examine first
Tsinghua University, Beijing
A strong choice for Computer Science, engineering and AI research. Computer Science appears among the Chinese-English undergraduate options, while special English-taught programmes are published separately.
Risk: extremely high competition and an expensive city.
Peking University, Beijing
Strong fundamental mathematics, Computer Science and interdisciplinary research. A good fit for students interested in theory and connections between AI and other sciences.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai
An established engineering culture close to Shanghai’s technology and industrial markets. Check joint institutes as well as the School of Computer Science.
Zhejiang University, Hangzhou
Hangzhou sits inside one of China’s major digital-economy centres. The official catalogue includes Chinese-taught and separate English-taught undergraduate programmes that must be checked each year.
Fudan University, Shanghai
A strong option for data science and interdisciplinary study. In 2026, Fudan lists an English-taught Data Science and Big Data Technology programme requiring CSCA Mathematics and Physics.
USTC, Nanjing University, HIT, BIT and Wuhan University
Applicants who know only three global brands often overlook these institutions. For a particular laboratory or engineering specialisation, they may be a more rational and sometimes more attainable choice.
Computer Science and AI are not the same programme
A degree called Artificial Intelligence may be:
- mathematically rigorous and research-focused;
- an applied engineering degree;
- a new marketing label over a general Computer Science curriculum.
Open the curriculum and look for:
- calculus, linear algebra and probability;
- algorithms and data structures;
- systems courses;
- machine and deep learning;
- optimisation;
- a research project;
- access to computing resources;
- ethics and safety.
If the page contains only slogans about the “AI revolution,” it is marketing, not a curriculum.
Teaching language and CSCA
For undergraduate admission, check:
- Chinese, English or bilingual delivery;
- HSK, IELTS or TOEFL;
- CSCA Mathematics;
- CSCA Physics;
- Professional Chinese for the scholarship route;
- the language of each exam.
Fudan’s English-taught Data Science programme in 2026 requires Mathematics and Physics. Another university may choose a different combination.
How to build six applications
Use a portfolio:
- 2 highly competitive choices;
- 2 options matching your current profile;
- 2 backup choices with strong programmes.
Score each university on:
- curriculum;
- research fit;
- language readiness;
- cost and scholarship options;
- city and internships.
A tenth application only to a global top-20 institution does not make the strategy ambitious. It makes it one-sided.
Bottom line
Tsinghua and Peking University naturally attract the most attention, but your best fit may be in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Harbin or Wuhan.
Use rankings to open the list. Make the final decision only after checking curriculum, requirements, budget and the programme itself.
