Receiving an X1 visa does not by itself give you the right to live in China for the entire academic year. X1 normally provides entry for long-term study, after which the student applies for a study residence permit.
That sounds like a minor administrative detail until someone leaves it to the final day.
X1 and X2 in one table
| Category | Normally used for |
|---|---|
| X1 | study longer than 180 days |
| X2 | study lasting no more than 180 days |
The final category depends on the purpose, duration and programme documents, and the consular authority makes the decision.
Do not choose X2 merely because it seems simpler. A full bachelor’s, master’s or year-long programme normally issues documents for X1.
Documents commonly requested
The visa centre or consulate responsible for your place of application publishes the exact list. It commonly includes:
- passport;
- visa application form and photograph;
- official admission notice;
- a study-in-China form such as JW201 or JW202, when issued;
- additional documents required in the country of application;
- proof of legal stay when applying outside your country of citizenship.
Scholarship and self-funded students may receive different forms. Do not download a JW form yourself; an authorised organisation issues it with the admission documents.
X1 is not a residence permit
After entering on X1, the student completes university and local-government procedures. As a general rule, an X1 holder must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry.
The university normally assists with:
- address registration;
- a medical check or validation of an overseas examination;
- faculty documents;
- an appointment with the local exit-entry administration;
- the study residence permit.
Count from the date of actual entry, not the first day of classes.
Address registration
Foreign residents must register their address under local rules. A hotel normally does this for guests; a university handles dormitory registration; for private housing, ask the landlord and local police about the process.
Do not assume that a rental contract automatically replaces registration. Keep the confirmation because it is often needed for later procedures.
Medical examination
Long-term study may require the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and a check at a designated institution after arrival. Even if you completed the examination abroad, the local centre may validate the documents or request additional tests.
Bring:
- the original form;
- test results and imaging;
- photographs;
- passport;
- copies requested by the university.
Do not use a random clinic before reading the instructions. An incorrectly completed form may save neither time nor money.
Can students work?
Student status does not provide an unrestricted right to work. An off-campus internship or part-time job normally requires university approval and the appropriate notation or permission from the exit-entry administration.
“Everyone does it” is not protection from an immigration violation.
Travel and entries
After issue, a residence permit normally supports both residence and entry during its validity. Do not buy an international ticket while your passport is being processed or before checking the document dates.
With X2, read the number of permitted entries and authorised stay on the visa itself. Extension or status changes are not guaranteed and follow local rules.
If you change passports
Notify the university and local authorities. Moving visa or residence status to a new passport requires an official procedure. Carrying two passports and hoping that is always sufficient is a poor plan.
Seven mistakes after admission
- Buying a non-refundable flight before the visa is issued.
- Treating X1 as a completed residence permit.
- Missing the 30-day period after entry.
- Failing to register the address.
- Using the wrong medical form.
- Starting work without permission.
- Leaving China while documents are being processed.
Pre-departure checklist
- passport and visa;
- admission notice and visa forms;
- dormitory address;
- international-office contacts;
- original degree documents and translations;
- medical documents;
- insurance for the first days if university coverage is not yet active;
- money and a backup payment method;
- registration date and residence-permit procedure.

Bottom line
X1 and X2 are not large and small versions of the same visa. They serve different study lengths and trigger different actions after entry.
Check the current visa-centre instructions for your jurisdiction and the university’s arrival guide. In immigration matters, last year’s checklist is a risk, not a tradition.
