HSK 4 may let you submit an application and still prevent you from registering for the first semester. There is no contradiction: some universities set one minimum at application and another for final enrolment.
The better question is not “which exam is easier?” but “which certificate must I hold on the decisive date?”
Official structure
| HSK 4 | HSK 5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 100 |
| Sections | listening, reading, writing | listening, reading, writing |
| Total time listed by the test | about 105 minutes | about 125 minutes |
| Maximum score | 300 | 300 |
| Result validity | 2 years from the test date | 2 years from the test date |
The official passing score for HSK 4 is 180. A university may still require a higher score or HSK 5.
Why HSK 5 is considerably harder
The difference is not just another number on the certificate. HSK 5 has:
- longer texts and recordings;
- faster information processing;
- more academic and abstract vocabulary;
- more demanding writing tasks;
- less time to translate every fragment in your head.
HSK 4 checks solid intermediate command. HSK 5 moves closer to the language of lectures, textbooks and extended argument.
A real requirement example
Donghua University’s 2026 undergraduate guide:
- allows application to Chinese-taught programmes with HSK 4 from 180;
- requires HSK 5 from 180 for final undergraduate admission and registration;
- offers a conditional route for an applicant with HSK 4, provided HSK 5 is submitted before registration;
- also requests HSKK for Chinese-taught programmes.
This is not a rule for every university. It is a useful example of why the phrase “HSK 4 accepted” does not tell the whole story.
How to read an admission guide
Separate requirements for:
- application;
- admission;
- enrolment or registration;
- scholarship competition;
- graduation.
They may specify different levels.
Also check:
- the minimum total score;
- any minimum for individual sections;
- the test date and certificate validity;
- whether an online test result is accepted;
- whether previous Chinese-medium education can replace a certificate;
- whether HSKK is required.
When HSK 4 may be the right choice
- the university really enrols students with this level;
- little time remains before the deadline;
- the programme includes a preparatory year;
- HSK 4 is useful as an interim official result;
- you can continue toward HSK 5 before registration.
When to go directly for HSK 5
- the programme requires it at admission;
- scholarship competition is strong;
- the major involves law, economics, journalism or dense humanities texts;
- you already score comfortably on full HSK 4 papers;
- there is time for two HSK 5 attempts.
An HSK 4 certificate at 180 confirms an exam minimum. It does not promise that you will understand your first microeconomics lecture.
Is the score more important than the level?
It depends on the requirement. HSK 4 at 280 shows a strong foundation, but it does not formally replace HSK 5 when the guide specifies Level 5.
Conversely, a barely passing HSK 5 may satisfy the rule without adding much strength to a scholarship application. Eligibility and competitiveness are not the same thing.
A preparation plan
If you are currently at HSK 3
First make your HSK 4 performance stable across full practice papers. Jumping directly into HSK 5 materials often creates the appearance of progress without the foundation.
If you already score 230+ on HSK 4
Add longer reading, uninterrupted listening, retelling and regular writing. Do not limit preparation to memorising a vocabulary list.
If the deadline is close
Take the admissible level now and ask whether you can update the certificate later. Get the answer in writing.
Bottom line
HSK 4 and HSK 5 are not simply neighbouring steps. Universities may use them at different stages: application, final enrolment or scholarship evaluation.
Choose the exam by the last mandatory date, not by the most convenient minimum in a promotional headline.
