Choosing a university in China is not a race to the highest ranking. The real questions are whether the programme suits you, whether the qualification is recognised where you plan to work, what life in the city costs and whether you can study in the teaching language for four years.

Mainland China’s top 10 in QS 2027
QS published its 2027 ranking in June 2026. Its ten highest-ranked universities in mainland China were:

A ranking is a useful signal of reputation and research strength. It cannot tell you whether a particular department is strong, an English-taught programme is well delivered or scholarship places are available.
What the C9 League tells you
The C9 League comprises Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, Nanjing, USTC, Harbin Institute of Technology and Xi’an Jiaotong University.
C9 membership carries considerable academic weight in China. It still does not prove that a university is the best choice for your subject or that it offers the right programme in English.
Start with the subject, not the logo
Engineering and computing. Consider Tsinghua, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, USTC and Beihang, then compare subject rankings and department pages.
Business and finance. Fudan, Peking, Tsinghua, Renmin and UIBE have different strengths. Check the accreditation and employer links of the actual business school.
Chinese language. Beijing Language and Culture University specialises in teaching Chinese to international students. Major comprehensive and normal universities also offer strong programmes.
Art and design. Portfolio culture, studios and industry access may matter more than an overall QS position. Look at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China Academy of Art and Beijing Film Academy alongside other specialist institutions.
Medicine. Be wary of the phrase “WHO recognised.” The World Health Organization does not accredit medical schools, and WFME recognises national accrediting agencies rather than individual degrees. Check:
- whether the school appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools;
- whether your future licensing authority accepts the programme;
- the language used during clinical placements;
- whether international graduates can enter the required licensing pathway.
Cost of living by city
There is no single price for a city. One campus may be far from the centre, and accommodation at the same university can vary sharply. Use ranges for the first estimate, then replace them with figures from your university.

These estimates cover accommodation, food, local transport, phone service and everyday expenses. Budget separately for deposits, insurance, books, medical checks and flights home.
Climate matters more than applicants expect

Conditions vary from year to year. Check climate normals and, importantly, heating and air-conditioning in the actual residence hall.
What the major student cities feel like
Shanghai is international, fast and expensive, with strong networks in finance, consulting and design.
Beijing is China’s political, cultural and academic centre, with an exceptional concentration of universities, museums and research organisations.
Chengdu has a more relaxed rhythm, a prominent food culture and a growing technology sector.
Shenzhen is a young technology metropolis beside Hong Kong, particularly relevant to hardware, manufacturing and start-ups.
Nanjing, Wuhan and Xi’an are major student cities where strong education can come with a more moderate budget than Beijing or Shanghai.
Career prospects after graduation
A city can create access, but it cannot replace language ability, internships or legal permission to work. Investigate:
- department partners and career services;
- courses with practical projects;
- internship access for international students;
- the permits required for internships and employment;
- outcomes for graduates of the exact programme.
Shanghai is prominent in finance and international business, Beijing in technology, research and media, Shenzhen in hardware and manufacturing, and Hangzhou in e-commerce and internet industries.
Strong options beyond the obvious names
Xiamen University combines a well-known coastal campus with the breadth of a major comprehensive university.
SUSTech in Shenzhen is a young research university focused on science and technology.
Sichuan University in Chengdu is a large comprehensive institution with a broad subject range and generally more moderate living costs.
None is a universal “hidden gem.” Compare the department, supervisor, curriculum and graduation requirements.

Internet access and everyday digital services
Access to overseas websites and applications in mainland China differs from many other countries and may change. Before travelling:
- confirm which learning platforms your university uses;
- keep essential documents and contacts available offline;
- plan for a Chinese phone number, WeChat and Alipay;
- read current university rules and local laws governing network services.
Do not choose a university because someone promises a particular VPN. Service availability is unstable and regulations can change.
Bottom line
The best university is not necessarily the highest name on a global table. It is the institution where the programme, teaching language, recognition, finances and city all support the life you actually intend to build.
Compare at programme level. A famous university with the wrong curriculum is a weaker choice than a less celebrated one with the right department, supervision and graduate outcomes.
