Admission to China is often lost not by weak applicants, but by those who first open a university website in March and discover that HSK, CSCA, translations and police certificates do not appear overnight.
As of August 2026, many universities have not published final rules for the 2027 intake. This is a preparation calendar, not an invented national deadline. Once your university publishes its notice, that document takes priority.
August–September 2026: choose the route
Answer four questions:
- Bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate?
- Chinese or English as the teaching language?
- Self-funded, Chinese Government Scholarship or another scholarship?
- Which cities and majors would you genuinely accept?
Build a longlist of 8–12 programmes. Do not choose from the overall ranking alone. Check curriculum, language of required subjects, campus, cost, graduation requirements and qualification recognition.
Campus China is a useful starting catalogue, but the university’s official website contains the final conditions.
September–October: check the exams
Chinese-taught programmes normally require HSK. The level and score may differ even between programmes at one university.
Undergraduate applicants should check CSCA. Under the current framework, Chinese Government Scholarship applicants take Mathematics and Professional Chinese; Physics and Chemistry depend on the major. Outside CSC, Professional Chinese is mandatory for Chinese-taught programmes at universities using CSCA.
Before registration, identify:
- the HSK level and whether HSKK is required;
- Humanities Chinese or STEM Chinese;
- whether Physics or Chemistry is mandatory;
- the date by which the university must receive the result.
Read our HSK and CSCA comparison and CSCA Chinese-section guide.
October–November: prepare documents
A typical package includes:
- passport;
- diploma or school certificate and transcript;
- Chinese or English translation;
- apostille or another certification method when required;
- language certificate;
- medical form;
- police clearance certificate;
- study or research plan;
- recommendations where required;
- portfolio for creative programmes.
The Apostille Convention entered into force for mainland China on 7 November 2023. An apostille does not remove translation, notarisation or a university’s internal rules. See our apostille and translation guide.
November–December: write an application worth reading
Committees see hundreds of identical phrases: “China is a great country,” “I have dreamed of studying here since childhood,” “your university is the best.” These sentences show that the applicant has not researched the programme.
A useful study plan answers:
- why this programme;
- what you have already done in the field;
- which knowledge or skills you still need;
- which courses, laboratories or faculty support the goal;
- what you intend to do after graduation.
Research master’s and doctoral applicants may contact potential supervisors when the programme recommends it. Mass-emailing professors is rarely necessary for bachelor’s applicants.
December–March: main application period
Many university and scholarship applications run through winter and early spring, but the range is wide. One institution may finish scholarship selection in December while another accepts self-funded students until May or June.
Track:
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| University and programme | official name and page |
| Route | CSC Type A, Type B, university scholarship or self-funded |
| Portal | CGSIS, university system or both |
| Deadline | date and time zone |
| Fee | amount and refundability |
| Exams | HSK, HSKK, CSCA, IELTS/TOEFL, internal test |
| Status | draft, submitted, interview, result |
There is no single CSC deadline. Type A follows the country’s authorised organisation; Type B follows the university. See our route comparison and 2027 CSC deadline guide.
February–April: interviews and additional requests
A university may request:
- an interview;
- another translation;
- a renewed passport;
- a new medical document;
- an original or certified copy;
- a subject test;
- proof of expected graduation.
Check email and spam folders. Several weeks of silence do not always mean rejection; university and CSC stages may run sequentially.
April–July: results and backup plans
Results do not arrive together. A university may first issue a preliminary decision and complete scholarship approval later.
Do not reject every backup after an unofficial email. The final reference points are the admission notice, confirmed funding and visa documents.
If you receive several offers, compare:
- total cost after funding;
- duration of funding;
- actual teaching language;
- housing;
- annual renewal conditions;
- degree recognition.
June–August: visa and arrival
Long-term students normally use X1; short-term students may use X2. X1 is not a completed residence permit, so further procedures follow entry.
Do not buy a non-refundable flight until the official documents arrive and the university confirms the campus registration date.
Prepare:
- original documents;
- the university address in Chinese;
- international-office contacts;
- more than one payment method;
- medical records and medication;
- offline copies of letters and tickets.
Read our X1 and X2 visa guide and first-semester guide.

Bottom line
Admission is not one form. It is a chain of small deadlines. The advantage goes to the applicant who understands the route early and does not lose a month correcting one document.
Start the programme list today. A perfect December plan cannot recover an exam session that ended in October.
