“HSK has completely switched to nine levels” is a convenient headline and poor advice for an applicant.
As of 17 August 2026, the official exam website still publishes HSK 1–6 as separate tests, while HSK 7–9 is one combined advanced exam. That is the fact your preparation should start from.
What the new HSK system is
The official framework describes three stages and nine levels. It is based on the Chinese proficiency standards for international Chinese-language education and covers:
- listening;
- speaking;
- reading;
- writing;
- translation at advanced levels.
The new syllabus defines not only vocabulary, but also tasks, topics, grammar and characters.
What is actually available now
The official portal currently lists:
- HSK 1;
- HSK 2;
- HSK 3;
- HSK 4;
- HSK 5;
- HSK 6;
- a separate combined HSK 7–9 exam.
If a university requires HSK 4 or HSK 5, prepare for the active version of that exam and read its current test page. Do not wait for an abstract “HSK 3.0 launch.”
How HSK 7–9 works
The official parameters are:
- 98 questions;
- about 210 minutes of active testing;
- listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking;
- five separate skill scores;
- a final classification below Level 7, at Level 7, Level 8 or Level 9;
- a computer-based online format on the current official page.
It is one exam that assigns a level from the result, not three independent tests.
What cannot be promised officially
The pages checked for this article do not provide one universal date when all HSK 1–6 tests in every test centre will be replaced at once.
Claims such as “the old HSK disappears in January 2027” require a direct official notice. Without one, they are forecasts.
Pilot exams, syllabus updates, local changes and new formats may appear. None of these automatically means a worldwide switch.
What a 2027 applicant should do
- Open the university’s current admission guide.
- Record the exact HSK level and minimum score.
- Check the active format on the official HSK website.
- Download the syllabus for that exact level.
- Choose a test date with time for score release.
- Follow updates from the official test centre.
- Do not rewrite your preparation plan because of an unsourced post.
Should you learn the new vocabulary lists?
Use the syllabus linked to the exam you will actually take. The nine-level standard is useful as a long-term map, but an admission deadline checks your certificate, not your knowledge of the reform.
If you take HSK 4 in two months, prioritise the current HSK 4 structure, full practice tests and the university’s requirement.
How to check a rumour
Pass every claim through three filters:
- does it link to the official HSK website;
- does it apply worldwide or only to one test centre;
- does it name a date and the affected levels?
A screenshot without a page address, an influencer’s video and an old presentation do not replace the current registration page.
What changes in long-term preparation
The new framework gives greater weight to productive skills: speaking, writing and, at advanced levels, translation. A learner who only recognises words in a test will feel increasingly unprepared.
In practice, this means:
- speaking from the first levels;
- writing by hand and on a computer;
- retelling what you hear;
- working with topics, not only word lists;
- reading academic texts at higher levels.
Do not confuse a sound language-learning strategy with the format of your next exam.
Bottom line
HSK is changing, but rumours move faster than official rules. The mature strategy is to prepare for the active exam while monitoring the new system.
Panic earns no points. A current syllabus, a realistic calendar and the university’s written requirement do.
